Rendition Flights through the UK

Yesterday’s extraordinary confession by British Foreign Secretary David Miliband about Britain’s role in extraordinary rendition is hardly surprising given the politically expedient record of lies and spin from successive British governments. Rather than apologising to the victims of torture and extraordinary rendition, Miliband merely apologised for the inaccurate denials by the British government of their complicity in the CIA’s rendition programme.

The circle will discuss Britains role past and present and also detail the Islamic alternative where values and ideals are not prone to the wills of the corporations that seem to benefit from carnage the world over.

Rendition through the UK

Last week David Milliband the Foreign Secretary acknowledged the use of British Airports in flights of rendition by the CIA. Rendition or Extraordinary rendition is the out-sourcing of torture of what the media unfortunately would term as ’suspected terrorists’ implying guilt, before even a charge, never mind a judgment has been made! I would prefer to use the term ‘innocents’ for surely we still believe in innocent before proven guilty? Or have the rules of the game changed according to ex-PM Blair?

This leads me onto questioning the values that the west supposedly upholds so dearly, values of justice, of equality, of tolerance. I do not question whether these values are supreme, but rather how firmly these are held, or are they cast aside for more strategic interests when the need arises?

It is this need that Muslims like myself and other upright citizens of the world across the globe are now questioning and asking ourselves: Do the west truly believe in the ideals of justice, rule of law, accountability and rights afforded to their citizens or are these only espoused when convenient and seemingly ‘necessary’?

For surely if the west believed in an accountable and representative government then why does the west allow entrenched primitive and thoroughly repressive political structures aggregated to represent one of the most poorly governed regions in the world.

For surely if citizens were given due rights under the law then why are Muslims being made to live under a parallel system of law, where they can be charged and indeed sentenced for thought crimes?

For surely if the west believed in an independent judiciary they would not consent to nor support regimes like the Musharraf dictatorship in Pakistan who has made a mockery of the judicial system within the country.

Muslims are indeed beginning to ask: ‘If the west truly believed in these values above all else, then why would fundamental and doctrinal issues like the caliphate, which according to polls, 70% of Muslims aspire to, be off limits, to such an extent that Charles Clark said in 2005 that it is ‘non-negotiable’.

It is unfortunate that western views are premised on the belief that the liberal political model is built on a series of values deemed universal, and currently provides the most economically efficient and ethically desirable form of governance.

Millions of Muslims like I desire a system that has rule of law, a transparent, accountable and representative government, and an independent and efficient judiciary. What many either fail to realise or overlook is that this doesn’t de facto translate into a call for democracy.

For indeed the Islamic political system has its own independent configuration and a distinct constellation of political principles and ideas embedding many of the core principles and values mentioned above. And is called the Caliphate!

Time to defend Islam?

quran.jpgThe recent remarks by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams sparked an unprecedented and shocking response from British society. Because he made some comments that were interpreted as being supportive of Muslims and was critical of the ability of secular Britain to accommodate believers of any religion.

This bigotry is not isolated to Britain. Apart from the cartoons against the noble Prophet (saw) two years ago and the current attack on Shariah, we have seen the hijab banned in France, and now calls to ban the Qur’an from a Dutch member of parliament! Secular fundamentalists in modern Europe use the mantra of freedom of speech to draw cartoons against the Prophet (SAW) and insult the Shariah while at the same time calling for the Qur’an to be banned! This is the hypocrisy of their ‘freedom’, one rule for them and one rule for the Muslims.

What we are witnessing in Britain and in the west in general is an all out attack on Islam, on its aqeeda, values, rules and laws. Their aim is, through intimidation, fear and harassment, to strip the Muslim community from her Islam, while at the same time occupying and bringing terror to our lands and supporting corrupt tyrannical regimes in the name of bringing ‘freedom’ to our people.

Our community cannot remain silent over this blatant attack upon Islam. The future of our communities and our Islam is being threatened here in the West. It requires us to take lessons from the Prophet (SAW) when he was in Makkah. He (saw) was ridiculed, insulted and harassed in the most derogatory ways by the Quraysh. How did our beloved Prophet (saw) respond to such attacks?

This circle will discuss how  the Muslims living within the UK should respond.

Another Anti-Islam Film?

Geert Wilders

For a film that lasts just 10 minutes and for which no one has even seen a trailer, it is creating one hell of an uproar. The cinematic debut from the anti-Islamic politician Geert Wilders has forced the Netherlands to wrestle with the limits of its age-old tradition of free speech and stirred up anxieties about a multicultural society.

Geert Wilders a radical right-wing politician who has threatened to broadcast images of the Koran being torn up and otherwise desecrated. It will, he claims, reveal the Koran as ’source of inspiration for intolerance, murder and terror’. In the past, Wilders has stated that the Quran should be banned like Adolph Hitler’s “Mein Kampf.” Wilders announced his plans last November, saying he was making a film to show the violent and fascist elements of the Muslim faith. In February last year he said that if Muslims wanted to stay in the Netherlands, they should tear out half of the Koran and throw it away. This circle will discuss and highlight the issues being faced by Muslims and map a way forward for the Muslim community, especially in the West.
